| Name: | Edward Elric (AU) |
|---|---|
| Birthdate: | 1919-01-17 |
Character: Edward Elric
Series/Fandom: FullMetal Alchemist
Original or Alternate: Alternate
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Sexuality: Portrays himself as straight but considers himself bisexual with a heavy preference for men.
Appearance: Edward has always been rather small for his age, something he's been consistently teased about throughout his childhood and teen years. Though since his growth spurt during his later teen years, bringing him to the height of 5'7" the teasing has slowed down quite a bit (though it probably also has a lot to do with his entrance into the military around the same time as well).
Aside from the height, however, anyone who knew the Elric parents before they'd died would tell you that Edward got his looks from his father. From his long blonde hair kept conveniently back in a ponytail, to his intense and thoughtful golden eyes, right down to his handsome, almost-feminine features. He has a charming boyish smile when he chooses to smile at all, but most of the time he's seen frowning in concentration, hunched over his notebook and/or a series of textbooks. This horrible posture will probably lead to him having a hump someday, but that's not the long-term he's thinking about at the moment.
Since he's not a soldier in the military, he rarely has to wear the dress uniform, except on special occasions, so Edward can normally be seen in a simple button-down shirt, slacks, sweatervest, and a pair of rectangular glasses.
But the most notable physical difference between this version of Edward and his OU counterpart is the distinct lack of automail. This Edward has every last one of his limbs.
Personality: Edward's personality is, in a word, strong. Overbearing. Even to himself sometimes. Due to the high-risk nature of his occupation as a double agent within the military (which will be discussed in more detail a few sections down), Edward is extremely paranoid. For the most part, he doesn't interact with anyone socially, simply the other military officials he works with and the members of the resistance movement he spies for that he's in direct contact with. Put simply, he does his job for the resistance movement, he pretends to do his job for the military, and the time he has where he's not working in the military head quarters or in a secret meeting with the resistance leader, is mostly spent researching, plotting, and studying alone in his apartment, which has every available security feature.
In contrast to this, Edward can be a very outspoken person, almost to a fault. When he sees wrong being done, he'll fight it, unless he knows that he can't. That it will put too much attention on him and put himself and, by extension, the entire resistance at risk. It doesn't always sit well with him to sit back and let injustices go, but he consoles himself in the knowledge that when the resistance succeeds, the military and the country itself will be better for it. And that is what he's been fighting for since the age of 16.
Both of these aspects to his personality contribute, to some extent, to Edward's temper. He generally appears calm, mostly to keep unwanted attention off of himself, but when someone threatens his brother or the resistance, even if they don't realize it, he can become very violent. It doesn't happen very often and most people tend to chalk it up his already eccentric personality, but he is a somewhat mentally unstable person and, if the threat is great enough, he has been known to come close to killing the percieved threat.
As far as his family is concerned, the only part of it left is his younger brother, Alphonse, who Edward truly and honestly believes is the ideal future for Amestris. Alphonse is also part of the reason that Edward is so paranoid about being found out as a double-agent, since Alphonse's role as the leader of the movement would get him killed if he were found out. If there was nothing else in the world that Edward cared about, not even overthrowing the corrupt Amestrian military government could trump how much he loves his little brother.
Abilities/Strengths: Edward is, thankfully, a skilled infiltrator, being able to convincingly lie and appear just interesting enough to be useful but not so interesting as to have people look into him enough to think he might be suspicious. He's highly intelligent and praised as one of the best alchemists in the country as well as having a decent off-hand knowledge of two languages besides his own, though neither are very likely to be useful outside of his own world.
Weapons: None, unless you include the stacks of books he's often seen carrying with him.
Weaknesses: His extreme paranoia, which not only makes social situations difficult for him since his default thought process is to believe that everyone is a potential enemy, but also makes things so much worse when he does, eventually, let someone in. It's a very rare occurance, but once in a while, Edward does make a friend or get involved with someone; however, he always feels that they'll betray him and, when he perceives that they do, it intensifies his paranoia. Sometimes to the point that he locks himself up in his apartment for weeks on end and works from there.
Eventually it's Alphonse, whom he is almost unhealthily emotionally dependant on, that has to drag him out of his apartment and remind him of the outside world and his duties. Not that Edward had ever lost sight of his duties, but while the resistance was interested in his research for the military, it was also very much interested in his research on the military.
His mental instability is also quite a detriment since it not only contributes to his acute paranoia and his dependence on his brother, but also sends him into rages on occasion. These episodes put himself, his brother, the resistance movement, and the object of his anger at risk. Think of him almost like The Incredible Hulk only with about one-fiftieth his strength; he perceives a threat to something he cares deeply about, he becomes angered, and goes on a rampage, not caring about who he might hurt or kill on the way, even if it's himself or an innocent person.
And, of course, just like every other human, he's susceptible to illness, injury, and death.
History: To start off with, this version of Edward's world, while similar in basic setup, differs on a few key points. For one thing, alchemy, while still used the same way it's used in the anime OU, was developed at the same rate as the technology was; meaning that, while the technology is just about on par with ours for the time, alchemy isn't quite as advanced. Specifically speaking, the Philosopher's Stone is still just a myth, there are no homunculi, and there hasn't been a single non-fatal human transmutation in the history of the attempts (though it's still illegal and this also leaves out any knowledge of the Gate as well as the ability to perform transmutation without an array). The timeline has been moved forward about 26 years, giving it a late 1930s/early 1940s setting instead. Finally, while Hohenheim and Dante both exist, they are simply alchemists with questionable morals (Dante especially, naturally), but normal lifespans and no great significant contribution to the alchemic world (IE no Philosopher's Stone or homunculi).
Edward was born in the village of Rizenbul in the Eastern Area of Amestris on January 17, 1919 and his younger brother, Alphonse, was born a year later. Their father, Hohenheim, was a State Alchemist and their mother, Trisha, raised a small vegetable/fruit farm on their property to add to their income.
While Trisha was a loving, kind, fair, and just about perfect mother, due to the nature of Hohenheim's job as a State Alchemist, he was often away from home or too busy to come out of his study for more than meals. Edward, more than Alphonse, resented this, mostly because he saw what affect it had on their mother and couldn't stand to see her so upset when it was something so simple that would make her happy. However, by the time that Hohenheim had finally realized this, and realized just what sort of organization he was working for, it was too late. He'd tried to get out, but before the military would even think of looking over the paperwork, all of the State Alchemists were called into active duty and shipped out to squash the uprising in the neighboring country of Ishbal.
Four years later, the war ended abruptly and the Elrics received a final letter from Hohenheim telling them that, under questionable orders, he was the one that killed the parents of Edward and Alphonse's childhood friend, Winry Rockbell. Their only crime had been treating the Ishbalan soldiers as well as the Amestrian, but the military had wanted them dead. Hohenheim had been made to do it and, after writing the letter, he would kill himself. It had been dated as being written a week earlier. Soon after, Trisha, as if she'd just given up on life, passed as well
Edward, who'd been fourteen at the time, had cursed his father for leaving them like that and making his mother die without him by her side, but deep down, he knew what the real problem was: The military. Slowly but surely, information was coming out about the Ishbal War; that most of the atrocities that the Amestrian Fuhrer had accused the other country of had either never happened, been caused by the Amestrian side, or had been severely exaggerated. And the level of corruption didn't just stop there. Inhumane experiments were done secretly in secured military compounds; murderers and other criminals were given a slap on the wrist if they were a high enough official; innocent towns were used in deadly experiments. The list went on and on and, when Edward turned 16, two years after the war ended, he joined a slowly-growing resistance movement.
It started out small with low aims, just trying to undermine the military, attacking single satellite bases and doing little more than disrupting their daily schedules and sabotaging their equipment. Within a year, however, it had grown, spreading across the Eastern Area and joining with other factions in the Northern, Western, and Southern Areas. They decided that the military government, itself, needed to be overthrown and, so, when Edward turned 17 and became a legal adult, he joined the military along with three other unknown resistance members (one from each Area). For security reasons, the identities of these spies were known only to the members higher up in the chain of command and not to each other. The resistance was, however, still without a leader.
This changed after another year and Alphonse turned 17, insisting on joining the resistance. Through proving over and over again his intelligence, insight, and ability to command large groups of people fairly and decisively, Edward was proud to agree in making his little brother their leader. But also scared to death. Edward went to extremes to make sure that no one would ever discover his connection to the resistance, almost solely to protect Alphonse. When all of the State Alchemists were ordered to look into the resistance movement, Edward took pains to spin just enough truth into his own reports to make them seem real without actually giving anything away. When he reported back his research on the military to the resistance, he met only with Alphonse or, if absolutely necessary, with Alphonse and no more than two other higher up members and always under the pretense of visiting his brother for a weekend or having his brother visit him.
Edward has been working for the military for three years now, spying on them for the resistance and pretending to spy on the resistance for the military. The choice has taken its toll on him, but he knows that it will all be worth it in the end.
